Make Your Own: Lip Gloss

I know many of you like to make your own products either just for fun or as a way of saving money.  I figured I’d go ahead and post a few homemade products that I’ve found around the web.  Most of these products can be found at your local health food store or vitamin shop, (ex: GNC, Vitamin Shoppe Whole Foods & etc.). If any of you have tried these let me know who they’ve turned out.  Feel free to submit your own cococtions as well :)    So…here’s what I’ve found for lip gloss.

Easy Lip Balm Recipe – using Lanolin
- 1oz. Olive Oil
- .3oz of Lanolin
- .4oz of Shea Butter
- .4oz of Beeswax
- Flavor oil and Stevia for taste.

Directions:Melt beeswax gently over a double boiler (or in the microwave if no double boiler is available). In a separate container, heat the Lanolin oil and Shea Butter up until it is fully liquid. Add the olive oil to the melted Lanolin oil and Shea Butter. Combine the beeswax and all the oil, stir well. Add flavoring (if desired) and pour into containers.

Sweet Honey Lip Balm

- 5-6 T. Sweet Almond or Jojoba, or vegetable oil
- 1-2 T. Beeswax
- 2 tsp honey
- 2 drops essential oil (tea tree, peppermint, etc.)

Directions:  Melt together the oil and beeswax in a small saucepan over low heat or in a double boiler until melted. Remove from heat and add honey and blend mixture with a small whisk. Stir until cooled, and then add the essential oil. The essential oil helps preserve it; also, jojoba oil will help it stay good, since it does not turn rancid. You can mix the oils, too (ex. mix half jojoba/half shea butter…).

Coconut Lip Gloss

- 1/2 cup beeswax
- 1/3 cup coconut oil
- coconut flavoring
- lipstick slivers or mica
- lip balm tubes or pots

Directions:  Melt beeswax and coconut oil together. Remove from heat. Add flavor and lipstick or mica to your liking. FYI: red lipstick will make a very alluring pink! Shimmery lipstick is particularly nice. Pour into tubes or pots and let harden. Enjoy!

Moisurizing Lip Balm

 - 2 oz Sweet Almond Oil
- 1/2 oz Jojoba Oil
- 1/2 oz Avocado Oil
- 1/2 oz shea butter OR mango butter
- 1 oz Beeswax
- 1/4 pure essential oil (if desired)
- Makes approx 30 lip balms…..

Directions:  Melt Beeswax in microwave in a glass bowl. Melt mango and Shea butters on medium low heat, in a small sauce pan on the stove. Add the sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil. When beeswax is melted (extremely hot) add to the oil mixture (it may solidify when added, just stir until it is all melted). Lower heat, wait a few minutes and add your essential oil. If you want to see how firm your balm is before filling the tubes, place a small amount on a spoon and put in the freezer. Wait 5 minutes, check it. That is how firm or soft your lip balm will be.

Now your ready to fill the lip balm tubes. Use a syringe to fill the tubes. Place lip balm tubes on parchment paper and begin to fill. (You can also use a lip balm holder). If the oils in the pan begin to solidify just reheat gently. We just keep ours on low while filling the tubes. When finished filling the tubes, top them off and cap them. To clean any overfills

use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and wipe them down. Your labels will stick better if cleaned. Makes approx 30. It may take a bit of practice to master filling the tubes with a syringe. Don’t give up just smile and try again!!!

When using pure essential oils or herbs be sure to research them! Be sure to clean out your tubes before using them. Don’t be afraid to experiment!!! Be creative!! Enjoy!!!
